Italian is a beautiful Romance language spoken by 65 million people in Italy, Switzerland and Vatican City. Italian is considered to be the closest to Latin just above French and Spanish. October is the National Italian American Heritage Month to celebrate the many achievements of Italian Americans. Some 26 million Americans come from Italian descent making them the fifth largest ethnic group in the US.
In addition to being a large part of American heritage Italy is one of the most influential countries in recent Western history. Italy was the home to the Roman Empire, the first Universities and the Renaissance. Italy is one of the most visited places in the world, is a founding member of the E.U. and is rated eigth on the quality of life index.
